Best Joystick For Mac
There's no right or wrong in this, since there's basically no upper end to the amount you could spend on a flight sim controller setup (which is what you need if you're going to play Elite on anything more than a console controller). I've got some CH Products stuff - it's pretty much unchanged since the 1990s, but very durable and has a few features that are particularly useful in Elite. It has Mac drivers, if you're playing in MacOS, but the game is much better in Windows.
One thing I'd definitely recommend is getting pedals, it makes a huge difference in Elite. I posted some control setups here. Those are both very helpful replies, thank you.
I hadn't realised that the developer seems to have only paid lip service to their commitment to offer a Mac version. As I don't want to run a Windows environment on my Mac or to get a PC, I'm now wondering whether I should buy an Xbox or a PS4 instead. As garnerx said, I could spend pretty much the same money just on a flight controller for my Mac, but then it seems I wouldn't be able to enjoy the game properly.
I want to revisit the title, which I enjoyed in my youth, but I'd prefer to enjoy the proper experience, so I'm not sure which way to go now. More confused than when I started, but for the right reasons. Thanks again for the help.
Joystick For Macbook Pro
I've had several logitechs, they look good, but they die fast. I haven't had one last more than 3 months. The plastic holds up, its having to recalibrate it every 10 minutes. I think they must be using real cheap potentiometers. I'm currently using a Saitek on my PC for the last 8 months. I haven't had to recalibrate it once. But the plastic is cheaper and looks like it will break eventually.
Logitech 3D has a heavier base, the Saitek I have is a little too light. The nice thing about the Saitek is that it can be adjusted for left handed use, unlike the logitech 3D. If the Saitek lasts another 3-4 months I'll buy another. Its lasted far longer than any of my logitechs.

On a lot of sticks or pads you have to get shareware to make them run on your mac. I use usboverdrive, but I havent tried it with the Saitek yet. Logitech Joysticks are HID compliant and work on Mac OS X without the need for any drivers. I know you can use a lot of Logitech Joysticks in Feral games and we never have had any major problems (we had a few small ones over the years if a new stick design is released) but no missing buttons etc If you have a problem in a specific game I would email the makers of the game it is more likely the problem can be fixed in an update rather than an unsolvable problem with the actual joystick design.
