Or you use the new 'Click to DVD' feature with select Sony VAIO computers to preserve your memories forever on DVD. Make the move to movies and enjoy the results with the easy-to-use TRV280 Handycam camcorder from Sony. Sony DCR-TRV280 These cameras are no longer manufactured.
They shoot in standard definition. If you can get one in good working condition for under $200 go for it. For best quality capture to your computer for editing you need a firewire(IEEE1394) connection. New computers no longer come with firewire, thanks to USB 3.0, so you may need to buy a good working older PC or laptop (such as the HP Elitebook 8540W) and a external hard drive to save the videos. Don't wait to long to transfer those old 8mm videos because time will deteriorate them and the equipment to recover them is passing away. NOTE: This camera will only play back the 1hour Digital8 tapes - NOT older regular 8mm 2hour tapes.
The Sony DCR-TRV480 will play back all 8mm video tapes. Verified purchase: Yes Condition: Pre-owned. Nice Consumer-Grade, Lacks A/V In & LAN-C Edit Control Digital-8 is far superior to miniDV in terms of reliability, because it's physically bigger. Its ability to record digitally on either Hi8 or standard 8mm videocassettes is a huge plus. Size of camcorder is also very nice. On the minus side, its lack of line-input recording capability renders it useless for archiving video onto Digital-8 from other sources. Also, its lack of LAN-C edit control makes it unable to be controlled by Sony editing VCR's and other edit-control devices.
Very nice for run-of-the-mill consumer-grade use, but falls short where enhanced features are required. Will not play back analog Hi-8 tapes I purchased this camcorder with the intention of converting our old Hi-8 tapes (from an analog camcorder) to the computer. However, after having received it in the mail, I attempted to play the tapes on it, and the play symbol would show up, but there was no picture or sound. I read the manual, and did some online research, only to find that this camera will NOT play back tapes that are recorded in the analog format.
Just thought this information might be helpful to someone, it sure would have been helpful to me.(The camera itself seems very nice, though, so for anyone who is not intending to convert analog tapes to digital, this would probably make a great camera).
