So, music was a part of daily life in the home of Mr. In grade school and through high school and college, Mr. Tanner was highly involved in every musical activity he could possibly participate in. He toured the southeast and Europe as a member of the Appling County High School Show Choir, and was also active in the band program at that same school. He was selected to represent his high school in Boys Solo at Regional and State Literary Competitions where he advanced as high as second in state. He was also selected three years consecutively as a member of the Georgia High School All State Chorus.Jeff attended the University of Georgia in Athens, where he graduated with a BBA in 1993.
While there, he also participated in the music department, studying voice with Dr. David Stoffel, and participating in the Men’s Glee Club and Concert Choir under the direction of Dr. Pierce Arant.Jeff was also a music major for a period of time, and competed and placed first in the state of Georgia in National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) competition on two occasions. It was during his high school years that Jeff began learning the skills of piano technology.
In 1984, he attended a two-week informational workshop at the University of South Carolina taught by James Bundrick, then the full time staff Piano Technician at the USC School of Music. Jeff says this was just enough information to “make me dangerous”! During college, Mr.
Tanner was fortunate to be able to serve as student assistant to Dennis Curtis, RPT, further developing his skills on the fine pianos at the University of Georgia School of Music.It was here where he was able to really hone his skills to a professional level, learning primarily from Mr. Curtis, but also from other technicians and through attending meetings of the Atlanta Chapter of the Piano Technicians Guild. After graduation, Mr. Tanner attempted several different sales positions in an attempt to utilize his degree, but continued to maintain a small clientele of piano owners, and performed occasional contract work for a number of piano dealerships.It seemed that a career in piano technology was sure to be his calling. In 1997, he accepted a contract position with Turner Keyboards, Inc., of Augusta, GA, a Yamaha and Steinway dealership.Then, in January of 1998, the University of Georgia came calling again, and hired him on a temporary/full time basis until he accepted a full time appointment at the University of South Carolina School of Music that August. Tanner enjoyed a very good report and acclaim with the faculty at USC, and his reputation has grown steadily in greater Columbia and South Georgia to be among the finest piano teachers and performers in the area.
